Literacy

India has more illiterate people than any other nation. Fifty percent of India's 1.2 billion people are functionally illiterate. The majority of Indian women living in rural areas and slums are illiterate.

Targeted people are desperate illiterates who are destined to be nothing, destined to become nothing, and destined to have nothing. They usually live on the outskirts of their villages or in slums. Children do not attend school.

Dr. Joyce Scott, a 50-year missionary in India, developed a literacy ministry in which classes meet 2 hours per night, 5 nights per week for 10 months. Of students completing the program, many can read at a 5th grade level.

Literacy classes teach students to help themselves Self-help skills are taught along with basic instruction in finance. Daily wages frequently increases 40% after literacy.

As students practice reading they also learn:

  • Basic health & personal hygiene
  • Nutrition & Proper diet
  • Community sanitation
  • Family relationships
  • Pre- & post natal care
  • Self-help skills -- financial improvement
  • Political rights
  • Government programs for the poor
  • AIDS, leprosy, and alcohol awareness

Most importantly, the primers teach the Word of God and each graduate is awarded a complete book with the Word of God.

The success rate is phenomenal. Over 88% of those enrolling in the Literacy classes complete the 10-month program.

The program multiplies itself as 30% of graduates are formally involved in the 'Each One Teach One' program. Each person becoming literate in India will help up to 5 others to become literate, perpetuating education.

Women's Literacy Projects and Village Rehabilitation Projects transform lives and communities.

$25 Teaches An Adult To Read

$25 can make an important impact on one individual who will in turn effect their family and other families via the “each one teaches one” program, which then changes the entire community.

$25 a month will enable 12 adults to read in a year, transforming their lives as well as the lives of their families and communities.

A gift of $750, or $62.50 a month, will sponsor an entire class of 30 literacy students, while a gift of $3,750 will sponsor a Literacy Project, consisting of 5 classes, or 150 adults.
