The Plight of Women in India

'He gave his life to purchase freedom for everyone.... ' 1 Timothy 2:6a

The Need

  • Women in India remain one of the most disadvantaged groups in society.
  • This is especially true in slums, rural villages, and tribal areas.
  • Overall, 39% of women are literate versus 64% of men.
  • In tribal areas, just over 12% of women are literate.
  • India has a tribal population of over 67 million people
  • In slums, almost all women are illiterate.

LIVING CONDITIONS FOR WOMEN ARE MOST PATHETIC

For example, there are 3 colonies in the Chittor District, which is in the state of Andhra Pradesh, where there are 2,000 women who are:

  • Primarily agricultural workers or construction workers.
  • Subjected to backbreaking work.
  • Treated like slaves.
  • Paid less than $1 per day.
  • Abused sexually.
  • Totally illiterate.
  • Under the impression they don't have rights.

Becoming Literate:

  • Immediately empowers these women, putting them in a position where they know their rights as citizens.
  • These women can be delivered from an abusive work situations.
  • Enabled to secure a decent job paying 3-4 times their current wages.

Knowing Christ Gives Them:

  • Dignity
  • Self-respect
  • Inner Strength
  • Most of all- Hope for this life and the next!
    • Solution:

These women can be set free from physical and spiritual bondage and become EMPOWERED through Bible-content literacy classes.

      Goal for 2007

To liberate 20,000 women from 10 states in India by enabling them to attend Bible literacy classes.

The total cost of this project is $500,000 (20,000 women)

Cost per state $50,000 (2,000 women)

Will you help free and EMPOWER them?
